Which State are You?

I glanced down a list of 50 conversation starter questions recently over at Suite 101.com and one of them intrigued me: “If you had to be named after one of the 50 states, which would it be?”

I’d hate to be named after a state for a couple of reasons. First, it sounds a little too Frank Zappa to me. Second, one state wouldn’t suit me for my entire life.

Early in my life I was introverted, shy, and avoided risk. I’m thinking I would have been called Kansas. In my early 20s I was a partier so I would have probably had to submit a name change to California. In my late 20s I became a Christian so I would have had to bug the judge again to change my name to one of the states in the Bible belt. In my 30s I was heavily involved in conservative politics before the movement became everything it said it was not; maybe I would have chosen one of the U.S. territories for a name as a form of protest. In my 40s I find myself immersed in the publishing industry with a strong desire to be immersed in community, so maybe I should be New York now, but I suspect I would probably end up being Colorado.

Why?

New York has too many people. I wouldn’t know where to start to fit in. Colorado seems to have a nice mix of secluded areas and gathering places for community. And several publishers are located there. Yeah, I know about upstate New York and it’s beautiful wooded areas and I know that NYC has a vast number of publishing houses. But Colorado seems more my speed.

What about you? Which state would you be named after?

I would definitely be a southern state due to my conservative political & religious views. However, I feel I may be moving to a more "Colorado" life. I am a nature girl (hiking, canoeing, etc...) but at the same time my religious & political views are becoming much more traditional (i.e., the desire to one day be a homemaker/homeschooler & I know there is a very large community of them in CO).

What a great conversation starter! And my mind boggles with the possibilities. I live in Indiana and there is an Indiana Jones, so would I be Indiana Miller? LOL.

But if you go by personality to pick the state, hmmm. I am in love with Tennessee since childhood. I love the open expanse of Montana. I love the attitudes of Texas. And Alaska is beautiful, so who wouldn't want to be known as beautiful?

Fun entry. Yes, I can see you as Colorado Warren! (Reminds me of that movie with John Wayne with Ricky Nelson as "Colorado.")

Oh Crystal ... Rio Bravo! We love that movie, along with El Dorado, all the Duke's movies with Maureen O'Hara and a bunch of others!

Hmm, I would love to live in Colorado mountain area, or maybe Wyoming in the Tetons, or perhaps Montana - again, in the mountains. Montana's mountains have some cool name!

So, let's see. Could my name be Cowymo? Would Wymoco sound better?
How about Comowy? I just want to live in the mountains!

I don't think I'd like my first name to be one of the state names.

mmmm, fascinating topic, i would be first named New York, because i thrive on art, theatre and diversity of culture, resembling the different shades of people God created; I will be middle named Paris (which i know is a city outside the US in France, just work with me guys) because i love the French language and cuisine; and i would be surnamed London, because though expensive, it seems to be one of the coolest places to live providing a lot of outdoor activities and sports, among them watching Wimbledon Tennis. Sorry to break the 50 state rule there:)

Thanks for the fun answers! And by the way, rules are allowed to be broken when you invoke the word "tennis" in the equation.
